"I am well aware of the toil and blood and treasure that it will cost us to maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States. Yet through all the gloom I can see rays of ravishing light and glory. I can see that the end is worth more than all the means." - John Adams to Abigail Adams, on the passing of the Declaration of Independence This week we celebrate a holiday first commemorated by Christians who sailed to America to live under God rather than live under the hand of sinful man. They faced sickness, starvation, and death, but were committed to beginning a new colony on the shores of the New World, and all for the service of God. And He has been faithful. Who can doubt that God has been with this country, keeping it for His service and forever free? Who can doubt that when George Washington prayed for his army as they spent a miserable winter at Valley Forge, that God answered? Who can doubt that when the heads of our Founding Fathers bowed in supplication to the Almighty, that he blessed us all with a Constitution and a government subject to the will of a free people? Though we often look about our nation in despair, we must always recall that God was with America in the beginning, and He has never left. If He will save a city for the sake of ten, will He not save a country where the saints of God pray daily for His revival? Consider then all that we have to be thankful for, and let us depend not on election results or the evening news, but instead humble ourselves and seek His face to bring our nation back to the blessings of God.
